Clowns, circus & carnival.
Clowns are at the heart of Ernő Tóth's work — not sad or scary, but cheeky, theatrical and full of life. His canvases fill with Pierrots, circus troupes, puppet theatres and late-night carousels, painted in thick, strident colour.

Critics have called his world grotesque in the best sense: caricature and fairy tale meeting on the same stage. In 1982 a clown-and-circus painting won him the international first prize at the Humor & Satire Art Biennial in Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
Every painting and bronze clown below is an original, hand-signed by the artist and available directly from his studio near Budapest.
